#YoMIL: Empowering Young Women in Media and Information Literacy (MIL)
Building a Free, Diverse & Independent Media Landscape in The Gambia
Young Women's Media Info Literacy is promoting the inclusion of young women in the media sector in The Gambia.
The project focuses on developing a free, diverse and independent media landscape in The Gambia, where women contribute equally and confidently to strengthening democracy.
#YoMIL aims to eliminate media censorship for young women and overcome gender-based discrimination through media and information literacy training across all regions and the creation of a 'Young Women's Media Guide'. The guide will support civil society organisations and interact at different levels by introducing media and information literacy and providing practical ways for women to gain a foothold or grow in the media sector in The Gambia. It will be complemented by an offline app that will allow users to access the guide digitally.
#YoMIL will empower young women to tackle these issues by bringing them together with journalists and media representatives through a national women's conference and improve their knowledge and representation in the media sector.

Young Women's Media Guide
#YoMIL was born out of a deep desire to challenge the barriers that hold back young women from actively participating in The Gambia’s media sector. From cultural limitations and gender bias to lack of access and training, these challenges are not unfamiliar – I have lived them myself.
That is why this guide is not just a document; it is a declaration of potential, a practical resource, and a source of inspiration. This Media Guide is the first of its kind in The Gambia – created by women, for women. It reflects the voices, aspirations, and experiences of 280 young women across the country’s seven regions. From understanding media and information literacy (MIL) to media ethics, podcasting, digital storytelling, to navigating newsroom cultures etcetera, this guide equips our sisters with the tools not just to enter media spaces but to thrive in them.
